Sodium nitrate is an inorganic compound. Its chemical formula is nano3. The melting point of sodium nitrate is 306.8 ℃, with a density of 2.257 grams per cubic centimeter. It is a colorless transparent and white slightly striped yellow diamond crystal. Sodium nitrate has a bitter and salty taste. It is easily soluble in water and liquid ammonia, slightly soluble in glycerol and ethanol, and easily deliquescent. Especially when it contains very small amounts of sodium chloride impurities, the deliquescence of sodium nitrate is greatly increased. When dissolved in water, the temperature of the sodium nitrate solution decreases and the solution becomes neutral. When heated, sodium nitrate easily decomposes into sodium nitrite and oxygen. Sodium nitrate can aid combustion and must be stored in a cool and ventilated place. Sodium nitrate has oxidizing properties and can cause combustion or explosion by friction or impact with organic matter.
Appearance:
Colorless rhombic lozenge or white with yellow rhombic lozenge, a little bitter taste. Easy to deliquescence.
Properties:
Easily soluble in water, liquid ammonia, slightly soluble in glycerol and ethanol. Density: 2.257(20oC), relative molecular weight: 84.99. m.p.: 306 degree, b.p.: 380 degree.
